Not having any notable experience with musky rods, try about 15" or so. Re: simple spiral musky rod

Try maybe 10 inches.Once you get it dialed in you can put the bumper guide halfway between those two.

Jeff,
What fishing methods are you going to use this Musky rod for? The reason that I ask this question, is that some style rods work better for certain kinds of musky fishing than others. Be safe Re: simple spiral musky rod

i will be used for everything....top water, small bucktails, anything under 8 ounces where should i put the stripper guide? i've read everything from 16 inches all the way out to 30 inches...should it be as far as i can get it away from the reel without the line touching the blank? Butt guide should be same as usual...trial, error, static testing. Re: simple spiral musky rod

Jeff,
For a typical 7 1/2 - 8 1/2 foot rod, I will put the stripper guide at about 28 inches. No real reason to have it any closer. I have personally found that for any rod that will be used a lot in a tip down configuration, i.e. jerk baits, and for figure 8's at the boat, that the conventional wrap seems to be many times more popular than the spiral wrap. I have found that that feeling also includes myself. However, for those applications, where the bulk of the fishing will be " tip up " fishing, then the spiral wrap works great. Just personal preference. You might try it both ways. i.e. wrap it conventional, but apply no finish and go fish it for a week or so. If you are not 100% satisfied, cut off the guides and wrap them in a spiral - but apply no finish. Then, fish it this way for two weeks. Let your on the water experience tell you whether you prefer one style over the other or not. Be safe Re: simple spiral musky rod

Try setting the butt guide about 20-21 inches from the face of the reel.

Jeff I set mine at 22 inches and use the Fuji concept guides and wrap all of my rods simple spiral however bass fishing is all that I do some times get to do a little walleye fishing in north ark. I like the spiral wraps using and type of baits jerk baits spinners crank and swimbaits just less stress on the wrist if you do much cranking. you will see a difference if you spend 4 to 8 hrs cranking lures of any type.
