Built the Quickline switch rod , best rod Ive ever handled. After a hard days fishing and catching 2 to 3 lb. fish. I was taking my last when the second section exactly on the female ferrel joint, split and continued for abt 7 inches. First time this has ever hapened. If its operator caused I accept full responsibility but want to know what I did wrong , any suggestions? Im sending the rod back to PacBay but thought I would get several opinions of what caused the damage. thanks Re: broken fly rod ,why?

did you make a reinforcement wrap at each female ferrule?
did you bend the blank before doing these wraps? if the answers are yes and no, then you did nothing wrong as far as I can tell. _______________________________________________ If I'm not going to catch anything, then I'd rather not catch anything on flies. It sounds like a split-out or crush failure. A photo would be helpful.

On switch and spey rods, the ferrules can work loose during a day of casting, and a loose ferrule will split the female. Most spey fishermen actually tape the ferrules temporarily while fishing. Re: broken fly rod ,why?

I was thinking the same as Phil. the twisting casting motion will work ferrules loose and then bad things happen. I had just built a new spey rod a few years ago and took it out for a lesson with a well know spey instructor. the first thing this guy does is wrap electrical tape over my gorgeous wraps. my heart sank a little. but it probably saved the rod. all ferrels were wraped ,to my knowledge it has never been crushed, cant photo right now perhaps in a few days.Static distrib. of guides were used. I have been told that a loose farrel joint will cause splitting. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/12/2013 04:22PM by Maryann Cohen. Re: broken fly rod ,why?

It will. But generally that will cause the male section to snap or fold, not split the female section.

"Multi-piece rods are just as strong as single-piece rods"... or are they? George Forster Fort Collins, CO Re: broken fly rod ,why?

They are. Misuse isn't indicative of something being less strong or durable.

Not al ferrules are created equal.
There is a major manufacturer whose female ferrules are splitting under the wraps of some of their TH rods. Gatti says to wrap all of their female ferrules 15mm. I split a #10 wt's ferule just by spining it - and it had the manufacturers tape on the female ferrule. CTS' ferrules do not have to be wrapped at all. You will never know what happened. Tom,
What misuse occurred? Should the ferrules have been wrapped? George Forster Fort Collins, CO Re: broken fly rod ,why?

Some should be, others don't require it. Because most manufacturers don't specify which, it's a good idea to wrap them all. The tip may also have slipped out on the butt section. Properly seated and reinforced (when necessary) ferrules aren't problematic.
