3M/Jarden (Pure Fishing) alliance

Just ran across this news release. [solutions.3m.com]

Will this put Jarden in an unfair competitive situation with the ability to drive up the cost of other brand rods and more importantly blanks? How much of a market share does 3M have in the resin market for blank manufacturers?

Edit: The source that led to this link also claimed 3M had sold exclusive rights to the resin technology to Jarden.

3M has been selling their resin technology to rod manufactures for a while now. This just looks like another way for 3M to broaden their market share into other avenues in the sporting arena. Although, one must be careful when reading what rod manufacture ligatures and propaganda states. Just because they choose to use it, as demonstrated by the display of 3M's logo on their products, doesn't indicate how much of the resin they are using (10% vs 50% vs 100%). So it is still buyer beware, not all rod manufactures will use the same amount, but will all get the same amount of advertising from it!

St croix has been using the 3 M resin for years Since 2011 i believe
And most of what you read on there site is that the new technolagy is ( expensive )
So the price goes up

St. Croix stopped using 3M's resin a while back, for the very same reason I had mentioned. Not all rod manufactures are using the same about, but getting the same bang for the advertising dollars by 3M.

Jarden understands the importance of hitting specific price points among their different brands. Not all their rod lines will suddenly be premium priced products.

Why is it an "unfair" advantage? #M is one of this countries fine businesses, they don't make agreements like this without very good reasons for 3M. Undoubtedly they need volume and Jarden possibly is the answer.

I don't believe it is either and agree with your reasoning. The post on the other forum where I saw this originally asserted that Jarden had cornered the market on a critical ingredient to rod blanks and might jack the price to other manufacturers. I can't see 3M selling the golden goose or jeopardizing the non-Jarden market share. I just would like to separate the wheat from the chaff and understand what's going on in the market place.
