Newbee question but cant find the answer in my searches........will a spiral wrap limit the casting distance over the conventional guide wrap on a casting rod?
Never seem to see the spiral wrap on lighter casting rods is there a reason for this?
TIA
Paul

Hello Paul.

You need to talk to Steve Gardner.
As for searching, just put "spiral layout-frog rod" and change to all dates and read the whole thing it might be what you need, if not play with the search till you find what you need.

Bob,

New Bern, NC.

I don't believe spirals limit casting distance. IMO they are a must on light and ultralight casting rods. On ultralight casting rods the tip section will twist in a very scary fashion if guides are on top. I found this out the hard way 30 years age when I built a 4 wt. fly blank as a casting rod.

No, they won't limit your cast distance. The line has no way of knowing which side of the blank it's on.

The only comment I get about casting distance is "holy crap that went far".

My advice would be to focus on spacing and line path. You get those right, your rod will most likely cast pretty well during field tests.

The only reason that a guide would limit casting distance is because the line is rubbing excessively on the guide.

If the guide is the wrong size, in the wrong location, or orientation for a spiral wrap, you could have a guide caused casting distance limitation.

Be safe

I've had much positive response when it comes to the spiral wraps I've built for friends/family. They are always a little skeptical at first but are always surprised at the smoothness of the cast.
