RodMaker Volume 10 #6 unveiled the grips and the process to the custom rod building craft. It would be hard to cover this type of detail in a forum post, but in a nutshell you are using a carbon (or similar) skin over the top of an expanded urethane foam core (which is the real "meat" of the grip and responsible for its many benefits). The skin is slipped over the core, wetted out and allow to cure. Sealed and then top coated for long term protection.

Go to the web site of Riley Rods in the sponsor list on the left and you will find links to their process. I am in the middle of my second project and have found it easier than expected, results of the first were very good, and will be doing many more. The materials are available from Riley, and they are a good company to work with. Re: carbon grips
