So I have a rod where the eyes are fine but the handle is all chipped away do I need to remove the eyes and start from scratch as if I were building a brand new rod or can i replace the butt section from the bottom up pushing the new pieces on from the bottom?
Thanks Andi Re: replacing handle

G'Day Andi I've just finished one & what I did was to sand the grips down until smooth & then I used "Heat Shrink tubing" form Mudhole . It didn't take long & more importantly the customer was happy with the look & the cost Regards Baz Bundeena NSW Australia Re: replacing handle

Andi,
If you do decide to replace the handle without removing the guides, easy enough to do. Just have a handle that is large enough to fit on the rod from the butt end of the rod. Then, any place that the blank is smaller than the butt of the rod, just use masking tape to build up the diameter of the rod. Just place rolls of tape on the rod to build up the diameter. Leave a gap between each row of masking tape to the next row, to allow glue to get to the blank. When ready, glue up the handle area - work glue to the inside of the handle and slip it in place, cleaning up the glue as you do. If necessary, add a butt cap when finished. Andi,
All good suggestions above but here is another idea. You can turn (sand) the handle down from the butt to the reel seat making sure it is the same diameter all the way up and a bit larger ( 2 to 3 mm) over the blank. Then ream or drill out a new cork handle so that it just fits over the old one. Cover the old grip with Pro Paste or Rod Bond then slide and rotate the new handle over the old one and your good to go. Tom Bel Air, Md. Re: replacing handle

Andi,
If you are going to order just the shrink wrap from Mudhole - talk to them and ask to drop the shrink wrap into a padded envelope and ship it to your for $1. Maybe they will do it. Be safe Re: replacing handle

Or, buy a few more items and spread out the standard listed shipping charge among a little more merchandise.
