Is there any epoxy that I can get from a normal hardware store that is cheaper then flex coat? And how much epoxy will I need to coat the eyes and Reel seat on an eight for cobia spinning rod?

You need to keep in mind that the epoxy is one of the cheapest parts of the whole rod. The total cost of the blank + guides + reel seat + grips may be $80 - 300+ and you will only use $1-2 worth of epoxy finish.
You are far better to save money by buying low / mid range blanks and components, than to try and save money on the epoxy.

Craft store is the better bet. Envirotex epoxy is what at least two of the major fishing rod finish epoxies are and are just rebottled. The only problem is that the stuff does not come in small bottles to begin with so you might save per ounce but are not likely to save on total cost. Not for just one rod anyway.

I was lucky enough to meet a carpenter who had about 1/2 of a gallon of Envirotex left over from a job.
We made a deal, and I have been using it ever since.
As far as reel-seat epoxy is concerned, I bought the 32 ounce size of U-40 Rod Bond from one of our sponsors.
These produces don't go bad and the large sizes work out to be much cheaper than buying in smaller units.

Keep in mind that epoxy adhesives and epoxy wrap finishes aren't quite the same thing. Putting a straight epoxy adhesive over a thread wrap will work, sort of, but won't look to great and make quickly begin to crack and check. It's also a lot harder to work with in that capacity.

We stock a small kit of Flex Coat that contains everything you need to do that rod plus some left over.

Big problem is buying in small quantity is by far the worst deal. Epoxy lasts a long time (several years) so why not buy a larger amount?

Sam, your answer depends on length of guide wraps and type of guides....single foot/double foot...underwraps or not....and your climate, quality of your guide wraps, and how proficent and quick you are. Some could do it with 2CC's of each part but I wouldn't bet on it.....and then but maybe you mixup that much and it sets up before you get the entire rod done??

I'd suggest you buy at least the 4 ounce size. The 24cc pre-loaded syringes is a bad deal when the 2oz size is the same price.

Ok thanks. Looking at the prices I realized how much more you can get for the price thanks for the advice. I have it ordered and I'm looking forward to finishing my first rod.

A 10-6 casting rod with 11 guides, and the tip, uses about 12-20 CC of resin, varied by waste, and length of thread wraps. Your project would use a similar amount, I suspect.

Ken
Where would you use 20 cc of finish on a 10 ft rod? You can do the whole rod first coat with 6cc and still have left overs. Another 4 cc for the second coat if required and your done.
