Cutting Cork Rings Off on a Lathe

I have used various lock blade "carpet cutters" but was wondering what folks would recommend for cutting rings off a glued up cork handle.

Thanks

If you have a lathe it's much easier to just turn them off.

Failing that, you might find it easier to use a coping saw or even a hacksaw blade to cut-shave the cork off parallel to the blank.

Tony,
Very simple.
Take a regular pair of slip joint pliers. Open up the pliers and use the coarse gripping surface to grind off the cork. You can use the pliers and take off any handle in a couple of minutes.

Then, I use a heat gun to heat up the epoxy and a razor blade held perpendicular to the blank to scrape the glue residue off the blank.

Generally, the entire job is under 10 minutes.

Be safe

Sorry, guys!

What I meant to ask was how do you cut out single rings, carefully, on a handle that has not been glued on to a blank.

Tony,
I just did this last week.
I use my mini chop saw that uses an abrasive disk. Quick and clean.

Then i take off the blade guard and blade and replace it with an abrasive cut off wheel.

These disks are very thin. The high speed of the saw, and the thin disk make a quick clean cut to remove a ring.
Be safe

What is wrong with that one individual cork ring for starters? If you wish to do it on your lathe and have a very sharp parting tool, it is very easy to take one ring out of a grip. The sharper the better!!

Randolph -

How would you define "parting tool"? The tool of that name used in turning wood?

Thanks,

Tony

Tony, yes, exactly that. It can be anywhere from 3/16" thick to 1/4". While your handle/grip is spinning at a good rate of speed, slowly advance the parting tool into the cork. If you haven't used one before on wood or anything else, some practice would be wise.

parting tools work, but you lose a lot of material. I found that a hacksaw provides less waste and still gives a clean cut for thin rings from a cork cylinder. If you use a parting tool, make sure it is sharp.

Terrry, it sounds like he is just trying to cut one ring out of the grip, how do you prop0se using a hack saw to do that? With a parting tool he can cut that single ring out cleanly. A hack saw? I don't think so!

Yep
hack saw blade while spinning on the lath Don't go all the way though Or hit the mandril Then finish and clean off the lath

A hack saw blade would be my absolute last choice!

Why

If measured correctly Under cut and then Block sand

Put it on a mandril and reglue the new ring on
It is off the blank

Depending on what kind of ring is going back on Still
