I am new to rod building and have successfully built 1 fly rod. I am building my second rod (a 2pc spin caster) and have a question on wrapping the Ferrule. Should i wrap the ferrule with the two pieces together and fully seated, or should i have them together and loosly seated so i can get a tighter wrap to support the ferrule?
Thanks, JC Re: Wrapping Ferrules

Put the sections together snugly, but not terribly tight. That's all you need to do. The wrap is there to prevent a split-out from starting at the ferrule edge so get it close, say within 1mm of the ferrule edge. Use a little more tension than you might normally use for your guide wraps.
Many blanks these days have internal glass fiber reinforcing and don't actually require a thread wrap on the ferrule, but it won't hurt anything to put one on. .................. Re: Wrapping Ferrules

Don't think you need to have two piece together. One built the guide fell at the ferrul spot so plenty of support. Another no guide a med to firm tension not to crush the blank and start about an inch above and wrap to about 1/8". Pull through and finish. Re: Wrapping Ferrules

Jason,
When ever I either wrap the ferrule, or coat the ferrule, I put a wrap of wax paper around the smaller piece of blank. Then, I secure them together and do the work. The wax paper keeps the pieces from sticking, and in case some finish happens to get over the edge, the finish won't stick to the wax paper. Be safe Re: Wrapping Ferrules

When wrapping multi-piece blanks, it is easier to wrap with the sections together, otherwise you are wrapping an unsecured loose end. Re: Wrapping Ferrules

I think what Jason is speaking of is the old concept that a tight ferrule wrap will snug-down the female to the male making them fit differently than before wrapping. I haven't heard that discussed in years.
So - no - I don't think it matters what you do. I always wrap with the ferrule area hanging off the end of one of my supports. No biggie. But put them together, snug or loose, if you wish. If you can compress the ferrule so that it changes the fit - then you have different issues. Saying that - I don't build #"0" fly rods - they might - don't know. Herb Re: Wrapping Ferrules
