Photography Tips / Photo Box

There was a thread some time ago with instructions for a box to place rods into for good pics. A search turned up lots but not that particular thread. Any tips for capturing rod builds in good photos are greatly appreciated.

One quick way to get an idea of how to compose a good rod photo is simply to go to the photo page here and look through the photos. Note the ones that appeal to you and then consider the composition, the lighting, the background, etc. that was used in those photos.

I think where I have trouble is lighting. My understanding of a photo box is that it helps to create diffused lighting and eliminate glare. My photos tend to be too dark or have a glare on the epoxy on decals, wraps, inscriptions...

Mike,
A couple of points - a plain uncluttered background works very well. For example a matte white background with nothing else visible behind the rod.

Try to avoid the use of flash from a camera during the shooting.

Most times the flash will reflect back any rod reflective surfaces like decals etc. Rather use indirect difused light as you suggested.

In past years, I had picked up a very good "painters work light" It was brilliant. (sorry for the pun.) It worked wonderfully well for any type of room painting because the light was absolutely non glare and very difused. Very easy to do a perfect job in wall painting etc.
But the same thing would hold true for photography.

For example:

Or:

Read the last review on the first page about the person using the light to bounce light off the ceiling for taking great pictures without a flash.

Be safe

Mike, take a look at the link here. I am almost sure I got this a long time ago from this forum.
