I have a a Pac Bay 8' 5wt. 2-pc. that I'm about to re-wrap. Over the course of several seasons' fishing, the male ferrule has received some light scoring from grit that worked its way up into the female ferrule (this is a tip-over-butt ferrule). I have searched the archives on refinishing and found lots on re-finishing a whole blank. Are recommendations the same for just doing a small section (i.e. use urethane or Permagloss)? Any helpful tips here would be appreciated. BTW, how can I keep the crap out of my female ferrules? I always store and transport my rods in cloth bags and tubes; what else should I be doing? You can scuff/sand and hopefully remove those scratches and scrapes, and then recoat the ferrule area with PermaGloss. You may have to sand that, however, to then restore the proper fit and original amount of overlap. This is critical. Consider ferrule plugs. Russ Gooding wrote a nice article for us in the Volume 5 #2 RodMaker. They're classy yet functional and will keep grit out of your ferrule when the rod is not in use. ............
