I just finished my first rod build and just wanted to share it with you all. I just registered to this site, but prior to this build, I read as much information as I could about rod building from this site. I owe you guys a bunch for this coming out as well as it did. Two weeks ago I didn't have a clue. Sooooo... Here is the somewhat finished product before it got the final epoxy treatment.
And a close up of the SK2 seat before the thread trim. A few things i've taken from my first build. 1) I need to get better at trimming my tag ends on my wraps. My thread finishing had a couple stray fuzzies that dimpled the finish. 2) Applying thread finish, I found that you don't "paint" it on the threads. I got much better result by applying a big drop and using the brush to spread the finish but not brushing it. The best result were when I actually kept the brush slighty off the threads. 3) I wanted a flush mount for the threads on the reel seat. I could've trimmed about another 1/8" of the threads and I could've moved the threads about 1/8" closer to the trigger and it would've been nice and tight - just the right amount of threads. Overall, split seats are a pain, but I love the SK2. It's very comfortable. 4) Notice there aren't any winding checks on the butt and handle. I ordered the wrong size. I didn't expect the butt to be that small and I would need some "thinner" winding checks to make it look decent. I don't really think it takes away from the rod though. 5) Less handle material equals more tip heaviness. I compensated by doing a 10" handle. Before finishing it balance perfect at the top of the reel seat threads. After epoxy it was about 1/2 further up the rod. Overall, i'm satisfied with my first build. The rod is a SCIII 70MF with Fuji Alconites. I got the preshaped Fuji EVA grips that go with the SK2. The weight of the build was 3.4 ounces. What are some things that will help shave off some weight in the future? I used tape arbors for the seat cause the foam arbors that came with the seat sucked. Is there weight savings with graphite/composite arbors? Thanks for the advice and the help guys!! Looking forward to building some more!! Jose Re: My first build

That's an excellent outcome for your first attempt. Each one will get better, but it looks like you are already off to a great start.

Jose looks pretty good for a first build my first didn't look so flash .The only problem is you more than likely have the addiction from which there is no cure except to build more rods.Whatever you do make sure that rod has pride of place in your collection Regards Baz Bundeena NSW Australia Re: My first build
