Ask him if he feels the same way when he buys a commercially made rod, which I assume he's done in the past.
Or, you could tell them that, yes, it is a free advertisement and that's why you sold the rod to him for less than you would have if the rod didn't have your company name on it. You can waste a lot of time trying to talk sense to folks that really don't want to hear it, or you can scratch their name off your customer list and move on with your more sensible customers. The latter generally results in fewer headaches and a higher net. ................. Re: name of company on rod

Tom
Pretty reasonable question. When discussing the specifications of a custom rod, a custom rod builder should go over every single aspect of the rod - including any lettering that might be affixed on the rod. Certainly if a customer wants his name on the rod - put it on the rod. Certainly if a customer doesn't want the builders name on the rod - then of course - leave it off. The customer is paying for a "custom" rod. He is paying the big bucks to get exactly what he or she wants - It is your job as a custom builder to give them exactly what they want to the very best of your ability. Put it on every rod in a place they can't complain about. Decal Connection does this work for me.

Unless the customer specifies they do not want my company name on it...it goes on. Most of the time they like the fact it is on there so they can show that they have a custom rod. ______________________________________ Super Tight Lines......Don Re: name of company on rod

I feel it's important to have your name on your work. Yes, it's advertising but it also shows you take pride in what you put out there. At a minimum, every rod I build gets my company name and a unique serial number. No complaints up to this point. Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: name of company on rod

Ask him if he would buy a Picasso if Picasso's signature was not on it. I don't put my name on rods but I do put my "signature" which is a fish symbol with MK 1:17 written beside it. I consider what the builder puts on the rod is his signature as long as it is tastefully done. Re: name of company on rod

If you have a favorable reputation as a custom rod builder, most customers will be proud to show they own one of your rods, I've never had a refusal. Part of my offering with a rod build is any name they want on it as mentioned previously. Ray Zarychta Glastonbury, CT Re: name of company on rod

I always place the customer's name or phrase on top and my company logo and rod information on the bottom. Never had an issue with that approach. Re: name of company on rod

I actually had the following on my post but edited it out. " We went over the entire rod build sheet " and mentioned all of the above. I am very careful about what is on my build sheet because I don't need problems on delivery. Usually too, before I start building I make one more call to them just to be sure nothing has changed. This guy is a friend of mine as well as a good customer. So I told him there was a recall on his blank and I needed it back to check it out and make sure the serial number was not in the batch. I ordeded a "Custom Made For etc" decal and am putting his name on it tonight !!! Tom Re: name of company on rod

I guess the next thing will be "do I get a discount when you put your logo on it". Then I will say did you get a discount when you bought your last car with Ford or what ever on the front and rear. Re: name of company on rod

Dave,
A commercially made truck or auto is in the same category as a commercial rod, complete with its label. However, if you go to most hot rod shows, you will seldom see the name of the builder on the car. This is the same as a custom rod. The rod is custom - not commercial quality. Always ask the client if he wants the builders name on the rod.
If you are so set in having your name on the rod, that you will turn down a rod commission if you don't put your name on the rod - good for you. It doesn't make a lot of sense to your banker - but good for you! Re: name of company on rod
