I need a blank for tossing top water to Yellow Fin tuna in Costa Rica. Any suggestions on blanks guides and set up? It will be spinning.
I am building it for a gift for a friend. I think he said he would be using a 10000 or 12000 Shimano reel. Thank You.. Re: Rod for Tuna

look at the black hole line of blanks they are supposed to be awesome. other than that you can try OTI, seeker hercules, super seeker and some very expensive japanese made popping blanks that are stupid expensive Carpenter, HOTS and the like. I would think the black hole blanks would be the move i would make if i had to build one. hope that helps Re: Rod for Tuna

I am looking at the Phenix TPX800M. I have built lots of Bass and inshore rods but nothing this heavy . Not sure what guides and seat to use.I could use some help pointing me in the right direction.
Thanks for the help. Re: Rod for Tuna

Email me and I will help you out. Amtak virtus heavy guides and the 800H will fit the bill nicely. Alps seat and metal gimbal also. Kevin Knox ANGLER'S ENVY CUSTOM RODS QUEEN ANNE, MD 21657 #_#_#_#_# www.anglersenvy.com Re: Rod for Tuna

Topwater for tuna is a very specific application and a specific rod type is needed to do it correctly. The rod needs to have a soft tip to throw the lighter lures sometimes necessary to get a bite. Think 1 ounce. Then the rod needs to have the backbone to be able to handle the exuberant fight tuna give. Additionally, the action should be moderate to give the angler a chance in the long, drawn out fight with tuna.
Examples of blanks that fit these requirements; Black Hole Cape Cod Special, Saltywatertackle Race Point Special, United Composites Sidewinder, Spinal Popping, OTI popping, Temple Reef Black Devil. Other rod types may be able to cast the lures, but the fight will hurt. Or the fight will be just ok, but you won't have the backbone or casting. A fast action, soft tipped blank like Phenix, Seeker or Calstar is not what you want. Re: Rod for Tuna

Look at the Phenix Megladon. That will be a better option for you. Kevin Knox ANGLER'S ENVY CUSTOM RODS QUEEN ANNE, MD 21657 #_#_#_#_# www.anglersenvy.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
