I have a customer who is looking for a set of rods for musky trolling. I have never fished for musky so Im kind of lost as for what to recommend to him. He wants 2 8' rods to use off the side of the boat and 1 propwash rod.
Would a Batson RDR86MH with a few inches trimmed off the tip and butt work for the outside rod? I was thinking a solid glass rod like the Batson.546X.188X76 for the prop wash rod. Am I on the right track with these blanks or is there anything else that someone could recommend that would work. Re: Musky Trolling Blank

I would certainly give those folks at Batson a call. They have been very helpful to me. Who else would know their products as well as them? Not trying to sound like a horse's butt but that is what I would do. My father used to say, "Don't talk to the feet while the head is around." Re: Musky Trolling Blank

I have used American Tackle and MHX for Musky rods. They both are very good rods.Being from WI i have built a lot of Musky rods. The two companies I rely on are the two I told you about.. I am surprised he is asking for 8;' Lately 9' are in more control boat side. Lone Wolf Rods "Keep your powder dry and your lines wet" God Bless Re: Musky Trolling Blank

Mitch,
I have built multiple Musky rods with the Batson blank you are talking about and have had good feedback from their users. However, the musky rods I built were for casting not trolling. I think going with a glass blank may be a better idea for trolling if that is the ONLY type of fishing they plan on doing with it (glass to me is a bit tougher, especially when the cold wether comes around). If they plan to use the rod for both casting and trolling I would stick with the lighter graphite rods. Musky fishing is already strenuous enough on an angler, with the big baits they are throwing and reeling in all day I know the last thing they want is added weight. Anyhow, good luck and enjoy!
