BOILING GUIDES

As the title may suggest I need to boil some guides. I am working on a repair and there is a lot of finish on the guide feet still. Can I boil them to get it off? Thanks - Tyler

Maybe. Does the guide contain a ceramic ring? Too much heat may soften the adhesive used to hold the ring in place.

Tyler,
Just use a heat gun to get the guide nice and hot.
Use a needle nose pliers to hold the guide.
Use a craft or non scratch stick to scrape all of the finish off the guides.
Pretty simple and straight forward.

Also, by holding the guide with the needle nose pliers when you heat it; the pliers tend to keep the head from any ring.

Tyler, some of us use heat guns for this work, but take care around the tip section, it doesn't take much to overheat the blank and ruin the whole thing. I will use an alcohol flame briefly around the thin sections of the blank to soften the old finish.

The pliers act as a heat sink to help prevent the whole guide from over heating. You could also use a small pair of locking forceps as well but if you are careful with the heat, pliers work well.

Tom, They are Fuji Alconite guides. I am not too sure about using the heat gun because mine is quite clumsy and does not direct the heat as well as it should. and since thyey are double foot guides most of it is stuck in the wedge on the 2 armed foot.

You may find that it's safer and almost as easy to pick at the offending bits and pieces with a dental pick.

How about using one of those small, pencil-point electric soldering irons? I use one to melt adhesives in tip-tops. The soldering iron allows me to apply heat to a small area and see what's happening at the spot where the heat is being applied.
