Has anyone put metal ferrules on graphite rods? I'm considering this as a repair to a broken graphite rod. If it can be done, what are the precautions I should take?

You'd be far better off either doing a proper repair or making a glass oversleeve ferrule for the rod.

You'd have to source a glass sleeve from an old rod or scrap section.

Tom, why do you recommend a glass over sleeve instead of a graphite sleeve? More forgiving? or what?

When you make an oversleeve you're going to a larger diameter, which means if you make it out of graphite it'll be much stiffer than the area you're joining. By use a lower modulus material, that tends to offset the stiffness increase created by the larger diameter. Thus, you more closely maintain the flex and overall properties of the rod across the ferrule area.
