Hello .
Since i varnish a blank , i feel that it came a little more stiff ... Not sure because i dont have an other same blank to compare with . For instance , a 7 foot blank m=54.40 g. With 2 coats of Lumiseal ( with piece of pantyhose ) then m= 54,64g So the quantity of varnish weight 0.24g .... This is 0.411% of the weight's blank ... no too much . Then i try to estimate the aditional thickness . If specific density( Lumiseal ) is 1.5g for 1 cm3 ( métric system ) --> Then Volume is 0.16cm3 = 160 mm3 Butt = 14.7mm .......... tip = 1.74mm ..... lenght = 212.2cm surface ( area )= 54790.04 mm2 and thickness is = 160 / 54790.04 = 0.00292 mm = 2.92 micrometer Do i made a miscalculation ? If not , i think that a thickness of 0.00292 mm is realy very little . I repeat myself , it is just a feeling that the blank is stiffer ... I do not think it would change significantly the power nor the action significantly. But maybe the feeling ? Need advice from experienced rodbuilder ! Thanks. Didier . No, it will become a little bit softer. You've added weight, not stiffness, and now the blank must carry that weight. You can perform a CCS ERN measurement on the next one you do to prove this to yourself.
Action will be unchanged. Speed, however, how quickly the rod reacts and recovers, will slow a bit. .......... Re: Do varnish affect blank action/power ?

anything and everything you add to a blank (varnish, guides, thread, epoxy, decals, ECT. affects the blank.
As Mr Kirkman said: "Action will be unchanged. Speed, however, how quickly the rod reacts and recovers, will slow a bit" and the more you add the more it slows Re: Do varnish affect blank action/power ?

Thanks for your comments .
Yes , every weight added will slow it . Since i didn't held this blank a long time before i varnish it , I must be confused by my feelings when i thought it was stiffer . I would hate to have to buy the blanks by two ... This blank is a NFC MB 705 HM, that i plan to fit with TKTSG #3 ( 0.0306g ) , TLSG #3,5 for tip top ... From your experience, is that such additional weight ( 0.24g varnish ) can change the speed enough to be noticeable by normal hand? Didier . Edited 1 time(s). Yes. Often it is. Most people can close their eyes and shake a naked blank, and then add nothing more than a tiptop and repeat the sequence and easily tell a difference. Of course, that puts all the additional weight at the tip-most end, where it has the greatest effect on this sort of thing.
