I'm building a couple combo fly/spinning rods on MHX 8' 3 wt 4pc blanks. My question is does anyone have a formula or opinion as to what the line and lure weight range would be for the rod in spinning configuration?? Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Fly/Spin rod question

I would say between 2 to 6# test and 1/8 to 1/4 oz lure weight Ron Weber Re: Fly/Spin rod question

I think Ron is right on in the line wt. I also think that this rod would handle lures from 1//16 oz to 1/4 oz. Should be a fun rod. Great for crappy and bluegills!! Re: Fly/Spin rod question

I have made a number of this type of rod, and I have done them with either a detachable fighting butt of about 4-6"'s depending on preference, or made them so that the handle can be reversed for either way of fishing. That took some work. The detachable butt makes the rod into a spinning rod. The reversible handle does the same without carrying the detachable butt. the later is much more work. Hardest thing I have encountered on the combo rod is getting a spinning reel to fit a fly seat without modifing the spinning reel feet. Ron Weber Re: Fly/Spin rod question

Ron, I just checked a dozen different fly reel seats and the all fit an appropriate spinning reel for this type rod. It was an older reel, a Zebco Cardinal 4. I have about 200 fly rod reel seats and I am pretty sure most would fit, especially if the barrel was of the proper length. Re: Fly/Spin rod question

Ron, in addition to my last post, I have to say that I have put a wrong reel seat on a rod!! I was making a British Columbia Mooch Drift rod designed for a Hardy Silex reel and didn't check to see that the reel foot would fit the seat. Bad Mistake!! After I made the rod I tried to put the reel on and there was no way it would fit!! The Silex has a brass foot that is so thick it wouldn't fit the slimmer hood of the seat! Thank goodness I had made this rod for myself and not a customer. I still have the rod and have found that a Ross CLA-7 fits it and works well, and I also made a rod with a seat that would accommodate the Silex. I Learned this "double check, double check"!!!! I do the opposite and use a 16mm spin seat. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
