I see that some rode are epoxied from above the butt to the tip, and some
are done over the wraps on the guides and butt wrap alone. Now I understand that epoxy affects the action of the blank. This particular rod is a heavy boat rod the old type with a wooden butt. So my question is this, if I did want to epoxy the . entire rod from butt wrap up do I just do the the thread work now, then when thats dry do the rest? Or just do it all at once? The reason I ask is, if the butt is sitting in the drying motor where do I put the rod support To keep the Rod in a stright position? I tried the support under the reel seat, seems to be ok but what the @#$%& do I know. So if any one could throw their 2 cents in great. Thanks in advance. Tight lines. Keith. Why do you want to coat the entire blank? Just curious. Re: first epoxy coat, where do I start.

Please layout the reason why you need to coat the entire blank as you cannot just coat the blank with epoxy there is more to it then just using plain old epoxy like Flex Coat or a Standard epoxy. As for it effecting the rod action it will not effect the action all that much so it may be a disappointment if you are expecting to give your rod a better action or a stronger action. Action will not be affected, although rod speed will be. This won't be much of a problem on a heavy saltwater rod but like the others, I see no reason to coat the blank.
If your current blank is needing refinishing, epoxy is not the ideal product for that. ................... Re: first epoxy coat, where do I start.

Thanks Glenn, I spray painted the blank and thought the epoxy would hold the nice new paint look. So what should I do? You mentioned their is more to it, to you please go into detail. Thank you. Hi Keith,
You can coat the colour with two pack automotive clears or permagloss which will protect the paint and help keep the "new" look. Make sure the paint has been allowed to dry for at least a week before if you use permagloss as it has "hot" solvents and could damage the paint. After wrapping just coat the wraps with one or two coats of finish epoxy. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Re: first epoxy coat, where do I start.

If you have the guides off of it, take Col's advice above and complete finishing the blank. Give it a few days to dry, then wrap the guides and finish with your thread wrap epoxy.

Tom,Bill,Col., Glenn,
Thank you so much for the input. Yeah I should have asked first, but I like jumping in. I did let it dry for a week after painting. Thanks for all the input. This forum is awesome. Thanks, Keith Re: first epoxy coat, where do I start.
