I am just getting into turning my own handles. Bought a Jett Mini Lathe. I have a chuck for the tail stoch that I have used to hold a bit for drilling out but caps ect.
What do I need to turn on a mandral? I thought all I needed was 2 chucks one for the head stock and one for the tail stock. I quickly realized that the chuck I have for the tail stock does not turn. What do I need? Re: Mini Lathe Tail Stock Question

What if the mandrel does not have a taper in the end like using all thread or just plain round stock? Re: Mini Lathe Tail Stock Question

Bore a 60-degree taper in the end of the mandrel. If you already have a jacob's chuck for your tailstock, all you need is an inexpensive end mill boring bit. Just a few bucks from a place like Grizzly.

The other option is a live Jacobs chuck that can grip the mandrel. Re: Mini Lathe Tail Stock Question

And with a live Jacobs chuck you know you will not bend the mandrel. ______________________________________ Super Tight Lines......Don Re: Mini Lathe Tail Stock Question

Chuck,
Pick up a set of center point drill bits: [www.amazon.com] These drill bits make drilling the correct size 60 degree center point in a mandrel, or other work piece. Nice - live tail stock: [www.amazon.com] You can also use a live tail stock onto which you can screw a lathe chuck for the tail stock: [www.amazon.com] Re: Mini Lathe Tail Stock Question

Yes, a live center is the least expensive option, after you drill the 60 degree hole on the end of the mandrel.
Make sure you get the live center that matches the Morse Taper on your lathe. Most midi lathes are MT#2. Terry Re: Mini Lathe Tail Stock Question

There have been occasions that the 6o deg live center insn't tight enough and the mandrel comes loose. Possible injury. Live center yes but a jacobs chuck live center 1/2" will solve your situation. Hope this helps. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
