I am working on my first birch bark handle, and have been following the article in Rodmaker Magazine. I was curious whether Titebond 3 wood glue would make a strong enough bond for the bark rings? Re: Birch bark fly handle question

Clive, a good thing to note carefully early on in Birch handles. Once glued up but still NOT on the rod blank, Birch Bark handles have VERY LITTLE cross strength. You can split them quite easily with very little pressure. If I'm sanding, reaming or tweeking them in any way prior to putting them on the blank I carefully wrap them some with masking tape to add strenghth. Re: Birch bark fly handle question

Thank you, Steve, for that tip. while I was punching out the rings, I noticed how easily they are prone to split. Masking tape it will be! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
