Novice ? Re: glossy rod blanks

Hey y'all, haven't been around lately, just been too busy with life, job, etc. Some graphite rods have a very glossy blank throughout their length, for instance my St. Croix Legend Inshore. In this case, does the blank itself come that way, or is the whole rod covered in thread finish? Thanks for your help.

No thread finish.
Some are just clear-coated. Some are just painted gloss (or matt) - usually auto paint. Some - like Sage are painted and then clear-coated.

All this "stuff" weighs something and detracts from performance in a light blank - as in fly rod or ultra lights.
That is why all my fly rod builds are with unfinished blanks (CTS - of course).

Never put thread finish on the entire blank...especially a light blank.

I would not even do it with a heavy offshore rod although I know some that do. Why, I don't know...but they do.

I just repaired a couple of older factory St Croix boat rods that were covered in finish from butt to tip.

Yes sir...they were completely covered on thread finish from top to bottom, they were about 20 years old...I was super surprised. Customer bought then new and I was the first one to work on them

Too bad you could not talk him into stripping it and putting permagloss over it
maybe keeping the or any inscriptions on it probable would have made it a lot lighter
