I have an 8wt rod that I noticed a smal hairline crack at the female furrell @ 3/16 long. I put some epoxy on it and rewrapped. will this hold or should I simply rebuild another rod to replace. Re: female furrel repair

IT WILL "PROBABLY"HOLD I ' VE SOLDERED CRACKED FERRULES WITH SUCCESS AS WELL AS REELSEAT HOODS ETC BUT A SECURE WRAPPING (top to bottom) AND A COAT OF EPOXY WILL WORK Larry Re: female furrel repair

If it's a glass rod, many of these will develop small cracks at the ferrule. A good re-wrap and finish coat will probably serve you well for a long time. If it's a graphite rod, it may work but it's also more likely to fail. I would do the same as you have done, but take a backup rod with me to be sure. Next step will be ferrule replacement. A nice article in the latest version of Rodmaker that shows how this is done.

i would think a rewrap and several coats of permagloss over the thread would work a lot better then just finish Bill - willierods.com Re: female furrel repair

Bill: The way you worded this is a little confusing. Did you put epoxy on and then wrap over this, or did you wrap and cover with epoxy? I think you will be alright if it was wrap and then epoxy. I know that some of the companies are saying that you don't need to wrap the Ferrule, but I go with the side of caution and wrap them anyway. Mike Bradfrod R.M.B. Hi Bill,
Another thing you can do with cracks is to get as small a drill bit as you can and drill a small hole right on the end of the crack to stop it from progressing. You need magnification to ensure you get right on the end of the crack. Fill the hole and the crack (if possible) with 24 hour epoxy, not finish epoxing, then bind over it and add regular finish epoxy. I've done this on a glass and graphite rod and both have held up over two years. Haven't done it on a ferrule but it's the only way to stop cracks from getting bigger. You have to very careful filling the crack as any epoxy seeping into the ferrule (squeeze out) will hamper ferrule fit. I would construct a new ferrule, as that sort of crack length is quite large and could propagate. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
