carbon fiber grip question

since I won a carbon fiber casting and grip kit at the Michigan gathering, Thank you Riley Rods. I've been planning all sorts of ideas for it. I'm thinking of having the coolest looking lather tools in town. I've got some homemade handles and here is what i'm thinking. apply a sealer coat of epoxy to the wooden handle then sand it smooth. place the carbon fiber over tht and then wet it out with the epoxy. then finish as for a grip. i don't see any problem with using the wood under it but I'll listen to those of you with more experience.
Thanks

It would work fine, but all you're getting is a cosmetic embellishment. Perhaps that's all you're after, and if so, then all is well. Go right ahead.

Gary, what Tom is saying is that with the carbon fiber, nothing under it is visible, so the advantage is to use the lightest substrate available that will meet the structural requirements, and that is probably foam. Using wood, if it is heavier than the foam, only gives you the appearance of the carbon fiber weave, but not the weight advantage of using foam under it.

Got that. but for a lathe tool I want that weight and yes it will just be cosmetic. I figure it will be good practice before I do the real thing.

Never mind, I just realized what you were referring to - a lathe tool handle. What you want to do will be just fine.

Just apply the epoxy to the handle. you do not have to let it dry and sand it will adhere just fine. Pull the cf over handle and wet out. Put it in the rod dryer and spin for a couple of hours. Let dry for 24 hrs, sand out and either lumiseal, permagloss or spray urethane spar varnish. Good to go.
