I bought one a few mounts ago i've only had pcs. of practice blanks in it worked fine i liked it and got a second,

well i put a salt rod in it 1" di. , the chuck kept loosening up, then tried it on the other one and same results,

they worked well with the thinner diamaters not the thicker, has any one have the same proublem, or a fix?

Thanks Curt

G'Day Curtis I used to have a problem with the blank working itself out of the chuck jaws .My solution was to make sure that the centre line of the rod was parallel to the centre line of the wrapper for this I use a laser & it only takes only a few seconds to set up . I also like to use a backup plan & for that I wrap a couple of heavy rubber bands around the blank & anchored to the chuck .That lets me go to bed without worrying about it falling out when the rod is switched to the drying mode

I got the ALPS with the upgraded chuck and even when locked down with an allen key it will spit out a 1.5 butt cap.
I use rubber bands around the butt cap up over the chuck.

Check to see if your chuck is rotating clockwise. I upgraded my American Tackle chuck and had a prblem with it loosening if it was turning counter-clockwise.....

I found the hex screw on the back of the chuck and tightened it up.
This pretty well solved the problem for me.
Batson told me they have some new soft jaws coming.
When they are available, this should be a big help with slick surfaces like some butt caps.

We get similar complaints from time to time regarding our chucks, both regular and deluxe. The center line issue Barry described accounts for the majority of the issues. We suggest you correct this first. Aside from that, plain old physics would suggest that a butt cap, even when only slightly tapered, will want to walk out of a chuck. It is wise to put the butt cap on last, after the guides are wrapped. Softer jaws and/or fixed jaws may help the issue but won't do as much as proper set up. If you are repairing a rod that has a butt cap installed, tape, tape, tape, or you may wish you had. I can't speak for our friends down the street regarding the Alps chuck, but I would imagine these rules would apply even to high-end wood or metal lathe chucks costing three to six times more than the current rod lathe chucks available.
