Wondering how many of you have ordered from them? I contacted them and he has sent me a price list. Just curious what the average shipping rate is ? Also I am new to building my own handles so I am wanting to get some cork to practice turning handles on my lathe what is the best grade to order for practice that will still turn out a decent handle?
Thanks

Cork 4U is an excellent vendor with excellent products and service. The shipping costs are typical for this as well as any other packages.

If you want practice on turning cork, go to the fishing rod donation bin at your local fishing shop, or go to Good Will or salvation army and buy a dozen or so rods that have some cork or even EVA foam handles.

Then, saw the handles off the rods, using a band saw, chop saw, jig saw, skill saw, or any other type saw you want to use.
Leave a few inches of blank on the rod in front of the reel seat when you cut the handle off the rod.
Then, drill a hole in the butt cap of the rod. Chuck the blank end of the rod into your chuck, and advance the pointed tail stock into the hole in the end of your butt cap. Tighten things up and let the assembly spin away.

Now, you can practice as much as you want to continue turning down the grips that are on the rod. This will allow you to become with the necessary speeds and type sand paper needed to get the look and appearance that you want.

If you have some of the less expensive rods and cork, you will also see what low quality cork looks like after you have cut off the outer filled surface of the cork. Then, you can practice filling the cork and then using the lathe and clean up methods to make the surface of the cork ultra smooth and perfect again. Pick up a couple tubes of Elmer's Light Oak wood filler at you local home builders store for filling material.

But to buy cork for practice, you can just buy the very least expensive cork that is available, if it is only going to be used for practice. But you will find that by the use of a good filler, you can end up with a handle that is very nice to look at and to use.

Good luck
Roger

Cork4U is a good vendor. I order from them almost once a month and it takes about 2 weeks to get my order from the time I e mail it to Joaquim. They pay shipping on orders of $250 Euro or more. This figures to be, depending on the exchange rate at the time, about $325 US.
