What size guides for a 3 weight fly rod?

Hello all,

I was wondering what size guides you typically use for a 3 weight fly rod?

I have a blank coming but have never built a fly rod this light. I have some single foot guides in size 1/0 ( i think) and there seems to be quite a bit of room for a 4 weight line to pass through but they seem a lot smaller than what I see on rods in fishing stores. I'm a little worried about enough space for knots to pass through but I suppose that will depend on how small a knot I tie.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

thanks,
Tom.

Rig up and tape your guides to the blank. Go out and cast. I would guess you are not using any sort of shooting head, just a regular fly line with line to leader connection such as LTL or nail knot? If so then that is all you have to clear and only when rigging up or winding all the way in for the day. The 1/0's are fine for just casting a 4wt line. You just need to be sure that you can easily get your line to leader connection out and back in. If not, move to 2/0's.

I would likely use 2/0 - simply to reduce any potential knot issues.
Remember, fishing should be enjoyable. Use a guide size that works for you, and with which you are comfortable.

Be safe

Thanks for all of your feedback. I'll try the 2/0 size guides and see how it works.

best,
Tom.

the problem I have with guides is the feet on small rodes, [ thin ] there is a place that makes curved feet guides for the fly rodes .they do cost more but it is worth it to me to have the guide foot fit the rod an not leave a big space under the foot , they are handled by most ofthe dealers that sell fly rod guides, at least the one in the north west an the one in FL.they are only a fly rod guide [ snake stile guide ] as well as other's , it is just they are the one's I do most of my busness with ,

You're most likely talking about Snake Brand guides.
