The company I work for is considering getting a custom fly rod built as a retirement gift. I've built a few rods but I'm not qualified to build a fly rod. So I have agreed to help find someone in the area that can get the job done. Any suggestions for experienced builders in central North Carolina would be much appreciated. If you are not too familiar with fly rod construction make sure that you specify certain things to guarantee lightness and good performance:
1. Rigid foam as a reel seat arbor (bushing). Absolutely not masking tape. Dry-wall tape is just an O.K. compromise. 2. Thin application of thread finish on thread wraps. just enough to cover threads. No "football" shaped wraps. 3. Lightest guides available. REC Recoils in singe-foot of double foot depending on preference. 4. Lightest tip-top available. Also the REC Recoil 5. If the blank can handle it - short ferrule wraps. As an example: CTS does not have to be wrapped at all, while Gatti needs 15mm. 6. Don't wrap the tip-top area. Just a dab of finish around the tip-top for a 1/8" finish. 7. No overly long thread wraps on guides. Thread should start at the end of the guide foot. 8. Debatable - but I like thread finish to end at thread and not overlap onto the blank. neatest and the lightest. Remember - fly rods are different than conventional rods and have to be built differently. Weight, of any kind and from anything, in the tip area creates a moment of inertia that slows a blank and negatively affects performance.
