A client is looking for a 7 foot blank with moderate to fast action very light in weight blank for pitching jigs up to 1/8th oz using 6 lb mono .
He does NOT want an extra fast, or even a tip that is close to that action. Rather, he wants a more moderate action tip on the blank.

I have several different blanks in mind, but wonder if anyone has great ideas for such a blank. I would think that the power of the rod would be a medium light, or a a shade lighter than a medium light rated power rod blank. I would think that the blank weight should be under 1.4 oz.

I would think that I already recommended the perfect blank to him on WC.

If he is wanting to pitch jigs "as far as I can" with 6lb mono you will need a blank with some backbone. The customer is always the customer, but they are not always right. I don't think he'd be happy with a noodle rod IMHO.

I have a Phenix Elixir FX701-1-B 7', 2-6#, 1/32-1/4oz., Fast, .339, 4.5, wt.-1.02oz. about $78.00.

I use mine with Subiki rigs catching striped anchovy for bait but sometimes catch menhaden, or cigar minnows or some pinfish lots of things to catch.

I know it's not exactly for 1/8thoz. but it should work pretty good!

Pitching walleye style or bass style, i.e. cast or underhand pitch? Also 1/8oz. jig plus plastic or 1/8oz. total weight?

It sounds like he's looking for about a 2 power popping blank, perhaps an XP842. Personally, I think you should loan him an 822.5 for a trip or two.

AMEN, AMEN! the 822.5 is what I set up for my wife for that exact purpose... I stole it when she wasn't looking. Just glad I didn't do it in pink. LOL at least I had a spare for myself after she caught me

Thanks for the idea. The popping rod you mention is at the head of the list. I have been a big advocate of the RX8 blanks in this last year. I also like the popping blanks for the purpose mentioned above.

Did you find the tip of the 822.5 a bit light when working a jig, or did it work well for you.

My favorite would be a SC 7' MLF, but sounds like that would be a little fast for this. So, I would suggest looking at a HM MHX SJ 841. The tip is not a fast as a drop shot blank and locks up a little faster than a popping blank.

Roger, for what we did with it, it suited us perfectly! I too have the RX8's in the IP840,841 and 842 but I still liked the 822.5 over the poppers. We were not in what many would call "heavy" cover so it allowed us to stay in great contact with it and have confidence that we "knew what was going on down on the bottom". I built one as a spinner with a stradic and one as a bait caster that I put a souped up chronarch 50 on with 6lb test, a pixy may have suited it better but over all both were nice but I prefered the spinner.

forgot to mention that I have also used some of the SJ's 841's and 2's and have been fairly happy with them, I typically use them with a 1/16 oz head and a small 3" Kalins grub so that might be over the 1/8 oz requirement. They worked ok for swimming the grub when looking for "keeper" bass and easily handle any larger suprises of walleye, pike and bigger bass we didnt do much "pitching" though.

After a lot of thought and comparison, the client decided to go with the RX8 - Batson - XP842.

I think that for what is wants to do - the right blank was chosen.

One of the big reasons that he chose this blank is that he was looking for the softer tip that the popping style blank will give him. He has plenty of SJ and other style stiffer tipped rods. This rod will be for those times when the fish don't react well to the jig action that happens as a result of the stiffer tipped rod blank.

It will be built with very light guides and a Tennessee handle, so will be nice and light for him.
