Carbon Fiber Epoxy

Is there a particular reason that it appears most recommended epoxies used with carbon fiber grips are 2:1 rather than regular rod building epoxies that are 1:1?

I think I remember Ralph O'Quinn saying that rod building and craft epoxies have fillers in them to create the 1 to 1 ratio for ease of use. I have used regular thread epoxy to wet out carbon skins and for the purpose at hand it seems to work fine.

I am not sure but normal thread epoxy is softer than the marine epoxy I use for the carbon grips. The marine epoxy is also way thinner and cheaper than thread epoxy.

Thread wrap epoxy does not become a hard shell surface, as it is designed to remain some what flexible. As such it with scratch more easily then the 2:1.

i use uscompisites 3:1 epoxy. I built an entire boat using it like 9 years ago and it still floats so i figure it's up to the task.

The 1:1 epoxies are typically designed as adhesives (Pro-Bond, Rod Bond) or coatings (rod finish)

The 2:1, 3:1, etc epoxies are designed as laminating epoxies. They are manufactured tor wetting out Fiberglass, Kevlar, Carbon fabric.
A whole bunch of properties are possible depending on your needs.

A carbon skin grip uses woven fabric - in the form of a sleeve, so a laminating epoxy is the appropriate material to wet out the carbon and bond it to the
foam core.

You could also use a fiberglass resin fast dry Hard as a rock I have used it on vetts A little tricky to mix got to get it right
An auto clear should work well also KlassKote has several clears nice stuff
And in colors
I have also put finish on cork The next day tried to sand it with 400 dry did not cut well I used 220 That was only the day after it does get harder if let to stand several days
