Bill:

I use contact cement in small amounts and find the "toothpaste tube" package of Pliobond contact cement (Ace Hardware) to be the easiest to use, and I can use it right down to the last drop before it dries out, so it is the most economical to use also. I don't own a respirator, so I don't mess much with ketone or MEK. Pliobond has always worked just fine for me.

Bill,
Here is the MDS for Weldwood contact cement - an old standard that I use today:

If you note:
50% of the product is Toluene.

So, Toluene would be the correct thinner to use for this product.

Unless you had toluene on hand, wouldn't it be a lot easier to just buy some new contact cement than guess if xylene is equivalent to toluene for this purpose? Contact cement is not that expensive...

John,
I would think it would make a LOT more sense to buy anothr bottle or can of contact cement if what you had was not suitable.

Oh, my local mom and pop hardware store doesn't carry that. I'll have to take a look at one of the chain stores.

Billy,
Do you still use the contact cement for your EVA glue ups or did you find something that sets up faster?

Tolulene is the correct thinner for Weldwood. It is nasty stuff by the way - Gloves and respirator strongly recommended - as well as a well ventilated area.

Even a new bottle of weldwood is a bit too thick for really premium bonds. thinning it really helps with even joints.
