finish problem with abalone

I built myself a spin set up for jigging. I used abalone on the rod and did a simple chevron over it. The next day I clean it up applied the finish all looked good. Second day did one more coat. I let it dry properly it looked great and then went back off to college without having the opportunity of fishing it. I came back roughly about two months later and saw there were cracks/flakes forming in the finish. Looked like the adhesive from the abalone had pushed through the finish. What should I do about this? Re: finish problem with abalone

it sounds possibly like some type of contamination if the epoxy is not acting as it should. or do you mean the abalone is cracked? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/14/2013 08:59PM by john timberlake. Re: finish problem with abalone

How well seated was your abalone on the rod? Once I apply the abalone, I wrap the whole thing with thread - snugly and let it sit overnight - It helps me make sure the abalone adhesive is firmly attached to the rod. Re: finish problem with abalone

The abalone was seated well with wraps about 5/8in on each side. The adhesive from the abalone has pushed through the thread cracking the finish. The Epoxy was fully cured there was no cracking for atleast a week. After that I had to leave it for awhile. When I came back is when I saw the problems occur in the finish. I have no problem with redoing it... just would like to know if anyone knows what the possible cause could be? Could I have wrapped the thread to tight causing it to slowly squeeze the abalone's adhesive through the thread over time? Re: finish problem with abalone

If I had to guess, and this is truly a guess, possibly it happened because if you only did a open pattern over the abalone without doing the complete overwrap, maybe the adhesive from under your open pattern moved to the open area and worked it's way through. Re: finish problem with abalone

If I'm reading correctly, it just on the ends where you wrapped thread. I've had it happen before as well. The thread is to tight on the abalone. This forces the epoxy/glue to seep up through the finish. Take a razor, cut the bubbles and do one more coat and you should be good. Re: finish problem with abalone

Craig is spot on. The thread has forces the finish through the finish. Cut out the spots and apply a coat of finish and you will be fine. Lighten up the tension. When I wrap to tie off decorative wraps, I leave about ¼" between the winding check and the abalone. I wrap with good tension on the blank part and when I come back up to the ab, I loosent he tension and merely cover the ab 1 or 2 turns to stim off the edge nicely.
