I have never encountered this problem. I am repairing 10 rods for a tournament angler and one of the rods from the split grip area up to the first casting guide the finish has bubbled up on one side. The rod is about 5 years old and is a telescopic flippin stick. Any ideas what could cause this?

Hi Jim; Here is my guess. It looks like the old finish, underneath the new, has come loose from the blank. The fact that it is just on one side, that is the side that has been facing up while laying on the boat deck. It looks like little "blisters" in the old finish. I am rebuilding one now and it looks the same way. I am taking off all the old finish and leaving it bare graphite. J.B.Hunt Bowling Green, KY Re: Finish bubbling up on older rod?

I have a few blanks like that from a few different manufacturers. Teh rods saw a lot of use and abuse and I assume teh factory appplied finish is coming off the blank. If you take your thumbnail you might be able to scratch off a bunch of the finish which will make it look even worse, lol. One blank is a composite rod, and the E-glass in teh tip has a lotof white, I assume the material is weakening from being used 300 times a year commercial over a 12 year period. I agree with what Billy said.. I have seen surf rods that are always in the truck racks, and they look just like your pictures. Re: Finish bubbling up on older rod?

Glad this topic came up. I have a fly rod with the same condition and would appreciate any help on the prep and refinish of this area??????? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
