Advice on Lathe

Hi Guys, looking for quick advice on the Jet 10in x14in 1/2 HP Lathe. It is on sale now for what I think is a great price, 375.00. I currently have a real old craftsman lathe which has served me well but I am looking for something a little smaller.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Thanks Bill. I figured you meant for reviews, and although I had read most reviews from the seller (I am a big review reader) I took your advice and googled it. The reviews were all the same (positive) but I found out that it is available through Amazon for the same price! and as a Prime member, well all kinds of good things go with that.

thanks!
Scott

Same one I have and I love it..

Bed extension and a Nova chuck and you're good to go.

Mike, do you recommend the NOVA 1" x 8 TPI Midi Chuck ?

Thanks again.

For a chuck, I'd recommend the OneWay Talon. I bought a Nova a year ago for another lathe and while it's a very nice chuck, it doesn't have anywhere near the capacity of the Talon and both chucks are roughly the same size.

Thanks Tom, stupid question for you guys, but what am I going to mainly use the Nova or the Talon for? Right now I have a keyed chuck that I insert my mandrel in, and when I turn a blank, I use the drive center.

Thanks for the advice, and pardon the dumb question.

I have the Nova G3. It has taken much abuse and has served me well.

If you have no plans to chuck up anything other than small diameter mandrels, either the Talon or the Nova may be more than you need. But they both allow you do a lot more with your lathe than a jacobs type chuck.

If variable speed is not an issue this is a great lathe. Use mine daily!

I have that lathe and nova chuck and it works great. It can do grips up to about 11" without the bed extension.

I have the same lathe and it's very good. I do dream of adding second unit with variable speed to the shop.
Then I'd make the first one a dedicated buffing station with a Beall or PSI 3 buffer system.

I got the One Way Talon 4 Jaw Scroll Chuck and added the Step Jaws for holding smaller round items.

It's also handy to add a Live Jacobs Chuck for the tailstock of the lathe.
This way you can grip mandrels at both ends which prevents them from flexing.. especially lighter mandrels.
It's an inexpensive add on. PSI (Penn State Industries) has them for about $35.

I suggest getting decent turning tools.
Crown and Sorby are excellent.

Lastly, sharpening is important.
Find a system which fits your budget and learn to keep good edges.

Then just have fun practicing.

Most important of all is the need to put safety first.
Make that your mantra.

I highly recommend a full face mask as opposed to just goggles.

As the old adage goes:

"A saw can cut you;
A drill can puncture you;
A sander can scrape you;
But a lathe can kill you. "

I have an extra copy of Andy Dear's DVD on using the Wood lathe for rod building.
You can have it for the cost of shipping.
I think he even used a Jet 1014 in the video.

Good luck,

DG

Will the 14" mandrel from Mud Hole fit in the Jet 1014 mini. I too just bought this lathe it came today and I measured between centers and there is barely enough room even though the tail stock was off the bed a little bit.
