I would think that depending on where the grips are you could take it all the way to the first guide. I'm doing one now that has a 16 in wrap in the split and about 8-10 butt wrap depending on guide placement. I'm looking at a lot of hours on this one.

No set distance. Do what you feel looks good, with an eye on the time required to complete it as you extend or reduce its length.

You've got a big space from the fore grip to the first guide, so if you are going to put a wrap there, it should be long enough to "balance" the look of that open space. A short one would look odd. On salt water stand up rods, the butt wrap often goes all the way to the first guide. For your rod, that might be a little excessive. Think about putting your wrap in the middle of the gap between the grip and the first guide, depending on where you put the inscription, etc. Tape some sample "wraps" (paper templates, etc) to see how the look might come out.

It's all a matter of what looks good to you, and yes, mine the photo section for ideas.

I wrap a lot of surf rods and frequently wrap all the way to the first guide if it is a one piece blank. It looks good. There is some calculating to make sure your wrap is centered between the spaces but it looks nice.
