It had been on the turner for about an hour. It is cool here and the epoxy wasn't tacky yet. I thought I saw a bubble. Guess I got the bic lighter too close! I have never done that before.
I think I could get it off with DNA and a coffee filter. Should I? It doesn't look bad but as I have never done it I don't know what type of harm it will cause. It smoked, but I wouldn't say it bubbled. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: I burnt/smoked my thread finish...what should I do?

If it's soft enough to wipe off with a finger, do it. Otherwise you're going to have let it set and then sand it off. I know of no way to remove the soot and discoloration other than by one of the two ways just mentioned.

next time just let it sit
It usually taks about 4 - 6 hours for finish to get even a little tacky The cooler temps will let the finish stay wet and flow better Don't try to rush it never touch the finish on the rod itself The left over in the mixing cup will tell you how it is doing Bill - willierods.com Re: I burnt/smoked my thread finish...what should I do?

One of the risks of using flame around the wrap epoxy! If you must use a lighter, use a butane one as it does not leave soot. But I have never found the need for a flame, there are other ways to get rid of bubbles. Re: I burnt/smoked my thread finish...what should I do?

How many coats of light finish is it taking you? I am struggling with the high build... going to try slowing things down and doing light... Re: I burnt/smoked my thread finish...what should I do?

JARED, try threadmaster lite.I'll do 3 maybe 4 coats. First coat should be very thin. Re: I burnt/smoked my thread finish...what should I do?

FWIW, I use threadmaster lite. I get by with one coat on lighter rods (freshwater/fly rods) and two/three coats on saltwater rods with underwraps. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: I burnt/smoked my thread finish...what should I do?

I have the same experience as Russell. 1 coat of Threadmaster lite on most fly rods and freshwater rods. I'll use 2 coats on a butt wrap or feather inlay. 2 coats on larger, heavier rods and always with underwraps.
