I am trying to find a tutorial or instructions for making a kind of scales wrap. hard to describe but I can tell you it is a regular butt wrap winding that has had something put under it to make a surface that has scales or tiny diamonds. I hope this makes sense. any help is appreciated.

I think I know what you're looking for. Although it has undergone minor variations and/or name changes recently, the following is the original 1998 article on the concept:

The first half regards grips and the second half regards thread wraps.

I think he is speaking of threadwork...have you tried the Rodbuilders Library? Google it and look under the threadwork page....: [www.rodbuildingtutorials.com]

I hope I didnt just get into trouble by posting that link.

" DRAGON SCALES" it is done with a tread wrap under or drywall tape works also. Works best with "A" metallic thread over wrap

It was developed, or at least first brought to the mainstream craft, by Dave Gottfried. It may have been done earlier, but I'm not aware of any published material documenting it being presented prior to 1998.

You can tighten up and increase the number of facets or diamonds by using closer spacing or making the underlay wraps on multiple axis. I believe that's covered in the article.
