What could possibly be wrong with the BBQ? This area of NC has its own style of BBQ, but it is good and should not be over looked. You won't find it anywhere else in the country, so at least give it a try. We actually are considered by Google to be the "BBQ Capital" (that's right, not Texas; sorry boys), and if its on the internet someone is going to believe it. The vinegar based sause found in Eastern NC BBQ eateries does require getting used to by many visitors, but once you do it is like Crack, your addicted. Of course, if you still don't believe me and want a hamburger instead, order one "all the way," that is another Easteren NC speciality that should not be over looked while your here.
Enjoy your stay here fellas; we'll see you at the show! Chuck Re: Shops and Eats in Winston Salem

I'm not sure any of the WS eateries serve eastern style NC barbeque. Maybe Pulliams. My favorite overall is Mr. Barbeque on Peter's Creek Parkway about a mile and a half south of the Convention Center. In fact, I prefer over anything served in Lexington.

I've done Mr. Barbeque as well and it's good. I would recommend it for Western/Lexington style barbeque.
Chuck, you misunderstood what I said/meant. I was speaking specifically about Pulliam's when I said don't order the bbq. Their bbq is like some sort of chili...nothing like any bbq you've ever eaten before. The time I visited I ordered a hot dog and a bbq sandwich, went to the car to eat (no tables/take out only), went back in and ordered two more hot dogs. I'm a bbq guy and didn't want any part of having more of the stuff. The hot dogs on the other hand are exactly what I was looking for. I'm a fan of 'red' hot dogs (like Brightleaf/Carolina Packers) and they do them right over at Pulliam's. Now, as a North Carolina native I recommend local barbecue to everyone. In Winston you'll be getting the Lexington version which, like the Eastern NC version, is seasoned with vinegar. The thing people from out of state need to remember is that our barbecue is typically seasoned and ready to eat when it hits your plate. Alot of folks don't like NC barbecue because of the vinegar sauce...but many of these people are used to adding sauce at the table. When you do this in North Carolina you end up with a fairly strong vinegar taste. Also, people from other states are used to seeing a thick bbq sauce sitting on top of the meat. Our vinegar sauces are thin, like water, and soak through the meat. I've watched people keep adding sauce because they couldn't see it sitting on top...then complain that it's too vinegary and they don't like it. I try to explain to people that our sauce is used sparingly as a seasoning and not as a sauce that's meant to be glopped on top of tasteless meat. My suggestion to anyone is to try it w/o adding any additional sauce. After that you can add more if you like, but remember North Carolina barbecue hits the plate already seasoned and sauced. I've been back home and had barbecue a few times in the past few months...Pete Jones' Skylight Inn when I get to choose & Wilbur's when my wife gets to choose.
