What do you guys use to mark your layout when you have an underwrap? Re: marking layout

If you don't go overboard, a light scratch on the blank (assuming it has some sort of paint or clear coat) works well. But again, we're talking a very light mark only.

With a fine tip, maybe. I use a click-type pencil because they are always sharp with a very fine point. I feel I get more accurate measurements that way. Re: marking layout

Thanks Jay, thats what i'm looking for. The most accurate layout I can get. On a bare blank I use a drafters compass with two needle points and make little scratches. Re: marking layout

For precision marks, I use the "inside" ends of calipers to scratch the blank to get .001 accuracy, more than I can achieve with laying threads, but it sure helps to get nice closed wraps on blanks with fast tapers. Re: marking layout

If I am interpreting the question correctly it involves locating the guide accurately when an underwrap is used, which means that a mark has to be made on the underwrap. A mark that you don't want to show when you're done. Right?
How about marking all guide positions on the blank one inch (or whatever distance is required to be outside the underwrap) off from the final position? Then no mark is necessary on the underwrap, only on the blank where conventional marking methods work fine. Pencil, wax, (probably not scratch since this mark will not be covererd with thread), pen.
