Is it possible to build a 2 peice 8' boat rod? I'm talking about a heavy cod or pollock rod for party boat use. We have found that traveling from here to there with a 8 footer is sometimes problematic at best. I have seen just one factory rod made that way and it was a Diawa that had the ferrule way down by the foregrip as to add strenght to the whole thing, however, it had a tendency to work loose. what say you ?? I just finished a tile rod that has an aluminum butt section 19" long that detaches from the main stem of the rod. This will not work loose as the ferrule has a locking nut. Re: 2-peice boat rods

Hi Frank,
You can take a 1 piece blank, cut it where you want and install metal ferrules. IMO never as good as factory installed glass ferrules but sometimes you don't have that option. Purchase a 2 piece surf blank rated 40 or 50 #, trim the tip and butt sections to meet your needs. Lamiglas GSB 144 2 MH, 12', 2 pc, 50 # class, 6-16 oz lures. Years ago cod fish rods were made from cut down surf blanks as there were not many blank options as available today. I will do some seeking out of info for you. Just read Ken Preston's reply and made me think. How about a Slick Butt with an Aftco reel seat that has a ferrule. Cut the blank where you want and fit the tip section into the ferrule. There are/were reel seats available that have a built in ferule that has a locking nut in them.
Positive location too with a channel so it can only go together one way. They are stainless with chrome finish and very strong. Also heavy but we are not talking 1 oz blanks so thats moot. I got some from Dennis Danku a few years ago if i recall correctly. Post a request on the buy/sell page and i am sure somebody still has a bunch of them somewhere. Re: 2-peice boat rods

Yes - heat shrink tubing is exactly what I used. You will likely have to use two different diameters to accommodate the decrease in diameter of the aluminum butt. Re: 2-peice boat rods

Frank, I have a number of Varmac wood trolling butts and matching reel seats that are far less expensive than Uni-butts, and they can be customized by staining & finishing. The reel seats and wood butts I purchased directly from Varmac when they went out of bussiness years ago. e-mail me if interested at
rjruwe2@comcast.net and I will send you some pictures. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
