Sterling silver inlay

I have a project in my mind that will consist of a sterling silver charm inlayed in the butt cap and and covered with epoxy. Will the sterling react with the epoxy? I will turn the project in another direction and not order the charm if the belief is that it will tarnish under the epoxy.

I might be wrong but oxygen is what causes tarnish or oxidation. I would think that the epoxy would seal out oxygen and keep it from tarnishing. The epoxy though over time will yellow.

Instead of using rod finish cast it in a clear resin. The resin will stay crystal clear and never yellow. You can pick up a quart of resin at Michaels or Hobby Lobbby.

Lance is right and resin wont effect the silver. If you dont want to use castin resin google doming kits that stuff works great as well.

Think I'll go the resin route. Was never really happy using finish on the other inlays I've done. They came out great, but didn't like the fact that they weren't hard.

After a little Googling, I'm gonna get a small kit of Envirotex jewelry resin to experiment with.

Scott, watch the Envirotex. That stuff is known to yellow more than our rod finish.

I know the stuff the guys use on baits yellows. I'm gonna do a couple test mixes and toss them outside for a while before i do the real inlay.
