Hi everyone
I am new to rodbuilding, this will be my first rod build. I am wanting to make a crankbait rod and would like some advise. The main crankbait I throw is 2-5 ft square bill. I'm thinking a 7' rod and maybe microguides. Any advise on glass vs graphite or brand of blank. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Re: crankbait rod

Lot of guys here that are better with a crnkbaitrod than me. But the one I use for that and small traps is a castaway xp3-963 trimmed 6 inches, whichmakes it 7ft 6in. not the 7 you were thinking.

Hi Jeremy,
I highly recommend American Tackles Bushido CB68/6-12 - 6'8" Popping / Crankbait 6-12 lb. or the CB72/8-15 - 7'2" Popping / Crankbait 8-15 lb. with their new MicroWave Guide System. Here is one that I personally have used and liked very much for a crankbait rod.
The Batson new Walleye blank, XSW72ML. Loads about half way into the blank, then gets good backbone. The blank is light in weight and the action is very crisp. Jeremy,
Take a hard look at the Rich Forhan Legacy Elite 765 from Swampland. It's an S-glass blank and will do all you want and more. Build it up (assuming casting rod) with all 4mm guides, all on top, and you won't be disappointed. It's an impressive blank. Joe Edit: Jeremy, since you are new to rod building, as noted above, the guys at Swampland are more than helpful and will get you pointed in the right direction regardless of what type of build you have in store. Lance and Bill are the first people I ask when I'm torn between which direction to go on a build. To learn a bit about the history of the RFLEs, take a look at this page. [www.swamplandtackle.com] Be sure to read the Rest of the Story link at the bottom. You'll see some of the details for the graphite/glass debate and a look at the action of the blanks. I know it seems like a marketing blurb, but there are only a few blanks that I've come across that I can't live without in my personal fishing (primarily bass), and those are my RFLE for cranking and the Batson 822.5 & 823 for finesse fishing. Jeremy,
you can't go wrong with the new S-Glass MHX series. This is a tried and true action sought after for years for the application you inquired about. [www.mudhole.com] And if you are looking for something a bit lighter and smaller in diameter the X-Composite Crankbaits from MHX are the ticket. Nice blank Todd, too bad for me they don't have it the 2 piece. I am planning to travel and am going to start to build 2 piece rods one each for each application I fish mostly.Hard to find. Have a good one. Re: crankbait rod

As a first rod, one might want to consider the Pac- Bay kits in the Bargain Cave area on the Cabela's site.
The "Angler" kit and the "Custom" kit are 6'6" IM6 two piece blanks that work quite well as crank-bait rods. I have built several of both and use an Angler rod for Pike in the Spring on Husky Jerk's. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
