Just wanting to know if anyone has ever ran into problems with any particular line of blanks. I have recently had 4 rods break on me in the first use. 1 just a few inches from the tip, 2 which were the exact same blank, but with different guide spacing, broke in the same spot about a foot from the tip, and the other about 6 inches from the fore grip. These are not high end blanks by any means but very aggravating to say the least. These blanks are lite and ultra light between 5 to 6 ft. The correct line weight being used when tested and breaking. I have probably made about 25 to 30 of these rods and have had no problems until recently. Is it me doing something wrong and what would cause this? Should I mention the manufacturer of the blanks? I suggest you talk the manufacturer. It may be a bad batch, or if they were shipped in the same container, it could be due to damage suffered in shipping. Just too many variables to give any sort of definitive answer as to why they broke.

You can always repair them. Check out the library article on repairs.

This is completely hypothetical unless you say who the manufacturer is and what rods were made with them.
If they are not high end blanks, I can't see that repairing them would be worth it. Breaking near the tip sounds like they have been high sticked. That isn't a defect. Drew Re: rods breaking

Is it possible to wrap the guides to tight and cause the rod to break at the guide? Re: rods breaking

YES.... that was what I was going to mention when I read your last post. The tentoin may have changed for "many" reasons. Usually the tention needs to be lessened near the tip when wrapping. Good luck,

Also, the breakage at near the tip may be from the user "high-sticking", holding the rod too high when they have a fish close to the boat or angler. It doesn't have to be a big fish, the high angle and rod properties don't mix well. I've had 2 breakages this year from High-sticking. Re: rods breaking

Chris,
A few years ago, one of the high end vendors had brought out some new blank models. One blank in particular had a unique tip that made it a wonderful rod for its intended purpose. I built a dozen rods on these blanks and had every single one of them break in the exact same spot. They all broke hear the tip, where the blanks taper changed. Many other folks had the same issue. The Mfg. redesigned the blank and replaced all of the defective designed blanks with new ones. Often the best way to recover the bulk of your build is to cut off the blank down to the butt guide position. Then, take a new blank and cut it where needed so that the blank makes a perfect fit on the current blank and handle. Yes, the rod will be a bit longer, but you will still have similar action and power. You may end up having to add one additional guide to accommodate the additional length. If you retie your butt guide on the location where you have glued the two blanks together, the change will be minimal. You will save all of the handle work and you will be able to reuse all of the guides. Roger Re: rods breaking

I had the same / similar experience as Roger. 12 blanks same model all snapped within 3 inches of the tip (within 1/8" of each other). Manufacturer replaced all the originals - unfortunately it meant replacing 8 of them from scratch while 4 people simply opted for a new tip top installed. I can assure you that this wasn't a case of overloading the blank; high sticking or wrapping thread too tightly ( have to say I have NEVER had that problem all the way down to 1wf fly rods - and I don't muck about with thread tension adjusting it from butt to tip) Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
