EVA foam handle problem...

I am considering using a 5" EVA foam shaped foregrip as the rear handle on an ultra light spinning rod. I have used one of these in the past with split grips, but never as a simple rear grip. However, I am at a loss as to what to use to close the end of the grip. There will be no tenon over which I could fit a butt cap. In the past, when using Tennessee handles, I simply glued an appropriately sized bottle cork into the opening and sanded it flush. I am sure others have solved this problem with ease and I would greatly appreciate any insights you may have. Thanks!
Tight lines,
Hunter

Hunter,
Pretty simple - cut a tenon into the end of the foam grip.

If you don't have a lathe, you can use a drill for the job. Just chuck in a drill bit that is close to the inside diameter of the grip. If the drill bit is too small, just build up the drill bit with masking tape, until the grip is a nice firm fit on the drill bit.

If you can chuck the drill into a vise to hold it, so much the better.

By the way, when you put the grip on the drill bit, put the end of the grip right next to the drill chuck that you want to use as a tenon.

Once, you have the grip secure, you can just spin the grip and cut the tenon into the grip with coarse sandpaper on a sanding block, or similar cutting tools.

Have a caliper handy so that you can keep measuring the size of the tenon to insure a perfect fit of the butt cap to the grip.

Be safe
Roger

Leave the rear grip just shot enough of the butt that you can use masking tape to buiild up to fit the butt cap you wish to use. Very simple procedure and works well.

Better solution - Pac Bay has a 5" EVA rear grip that is spot on - made for UL spinning rods, and a tennon for a butt cap. I like to use the cork composite butt cap with the EVA grip - really classy contrast.

Thanks - Marc

Keep it simple - that's all I can handle!

Put the grip on and leave it about 1/8" past the end of the blank and cut a plug out of another piece of EVA. I like to use a piece of copper tubing to make the plug.

Good luck. Stan

Thanks for all the replies. You have all given me some options which I hadn't fully explored. I am continually amazed at how helpful and considerate foks on this site are. Without rodbuilding.org, I would never have advanced my rodmaking skills from "really terrible" to "passibly mediocre".:) Again, thanks to all.
Slainte,
Hunter
