Hello all
I am redoing an old rod i picked up. It has a wooden handle in great condition that i am going to restain, but how can i take off the old reel seat without damaging the rod? I stripping off the guides a repainting it but i am stuck on getting the old reel seat of. Any suggestion. Thought about cutting with a dremel tool but as a last resort.

G'Day Marc The Dremel is how I have cut off reel seats .You cut in a spiral along the length taking care that you don' t cut into the blank .Once it's cut use a screwdriver or something similar to prise the seat apart .You can also make the cut using a hacksaw still using the spiral cut . I'm sure others will chime in to give you their methods & then take your pick which one suits you.

Marc just stay off the booze until you finishing the cutting . I should have added that I also use hot water to soften the glue when prising the seat apart . I wear rubber gloves & run it under the hot water tap in the laundry . It probably took about 10-15 mins to do

If this rod is typical of most old rods, just heat a deep pan of water that will allow imersion of the seat, let the seat get hot, and it should slide right off. I just did one a couple weeks ago, piece of cake.

Marc, If your not concerned about saving the reelseat use a heatgun to seperate the handle.
Also, if the rod is very old there may be a pin thru the reelseat which must be removed.

I have tried the heat gun approach and it can get too hot, damaging the blank (oops!). I put reelseat in plastic bag and held in boiling water to soften epoxy and it worked. If you're going to trash the reelseat just cut down the middle and pry off, careful of the blank.

Often the hot water approach with no cutting will do the job. Try it first.
