Hi,
Many rod builders and shops use the Pac Bay RodSmith with very good results. It can wrap and also be used a a dryer but not at the same time. I used one for many years. The new updated changes make it a better machine. Capt Neil Faulkner Re: Rodsmith rw-any good?

If you are speaking about the ALPS chuck assembly to be used on a PacBay / AMTak you should spend the extra $ for the chuck assembly. I changed over both of my wrappers from the "standard" to the PacBay "upgraded chuck" and since have replaced the PacBay 'upgrade chuck ' with the ALPS chuck - best money I've spent on rod building tools in a long time. Now I need the guts out of the RW3x [I have the motor and pedal-is there a rheostat too? and the ALps Batson motor. Does the Alps replace the sewing machine motor and pedal? Re: Rodsmith rw-any good?

The Alps chuck replaces the stock or upgraded chuck. You need the rest of the machine.
To install it, you remove the existing chuck, drill two new holes in the base using a template included with the Alps chuck. The new chuck attaches using four screws. Get-Bit has a wrapper with the Alps chuck that I intend to order as soon as I'm back in the USA. Garry2rs Re: Rodsmith rw-any good?

The Alps wrapper gives you multiple drying speeds up to 18 rpm vs the rodsmith of only one speed, I think around 11rpm. The upgraded chuck is preferred by many, although I use the standard chuck on the rodsmith wrapper with no issue. If you plan on turning grips with this unit, then the upgraded chuck is very desirable.
I always caution folks about turning and wrapping in the same space. You must take adequate measures to keep the area clean during and after turning, to avoid defects in your finish work. I use the standard rodsmith for wrapping and finishing, and do all my turning in the garage on the lathe. I feel this is the best system for me and also allows me to play with more wood for inserts and inlays on grips. Others manage to turn in their rod shop but the dust collector system and cleanliness issues have been addressed. Just be advised. I've used the rodsmith wrapper with standard chuck for about 8 years and find it to be very reliable. Keep an extra drive belt on hand and replace it when you start to notice cracks. I've had them fail during the drying cycle after lots of use. I've also had to replace a one drying motor in that time. Terry Re: Rodsmith rw-any good?

David,
In addition to the upgraded Alps chuck, another chuck to consider is a simple 1/2 inch keyless drill chuck for your power wrapper. Yes, you need the ability to open up the Alps chuck for those rods that are finished and need wrapping. But, if you are building a rod; and have not yet installed the rod butt, a standard 1/2 inch drill chuck is really a better option for a power wrapper chuck. Just chuck in a suitable sized solid graphite rod - and either insert it into the butt of the rod, to hold the butt end of the blank secure, or if the blank is too large, build up the graphite rod with masking tape so that the inserted rod into the butt of the new rod is a nice slip tight fit. The big advantage of using a rod inserted into the bottom of the rod for power wrapping, is that it never slips or comes loose if properly sized. For example: [www.wttool.com] If you do a net search, you will find many examples of such a chuck for this, less or more money. Be safe Roger Re: Rodsmith rw-any good?
