varnish over custom decal

I got a decal from mudhole.com, just one of the simple pictures of a fish. Is this something I can apply varnish over?

Hi Scott,
Never tied it so don't know. No decals the last time I used varnish on a rod. If no one else here knows then there's only one way to find out. Should be ok but varnish may have some solvents that will react with the decal. If you got more than one then try it on a piece of scrap blank. Might be an idea to put cp over the decal as that may help protect it against any solvents. Varnish does not hold up well long term although the newer stuff is probably better that what I used. You might also get some discolouration as the stuff isn't totally clear. Do some reading on finish application and you'll be much happier with the results than with varnish. If you use the threadmaster one part get in touch with Scott Parsons at RodDancer, on the left, and he will put you straight on the application method for that stuff as it's not the same as two part finish. If you do it please post the result as others might be interested.

If you are thinking of using a actual varnish, I would try to discourage of using it. It would be best to use one of the 2 part thread finishes, such as Pro-Kote, Threadmaster, Flex Coat, U-40 Duragloss, Classic Coat, etc.

Hey Bob,
I got one of the team logo stickers I am about to use in a build.....
Do I need CP or just go over it with flexcoat?
Thanks

Personally, I do not use color preserver, just thread finish. If you are using Flex Coat, that will work just fine. There are probaly some that will tell you to use color preserver, but I find that I do not have to.

I always use straight high build (flexcoat) over decals, i never use cp over them because it can sometimes look milky in sunlight (water based cp) prior to applying the finish i clean the decal carefuly to remove any grease with a paper towel/ piece of cloth moistened in distilled water.
