Hi Gordon,
There's plenty especially in the embroidery thread both polyester and metallics, stay away from the rayon. Stuff like madeira, mettler and brother offer huge colour selection and varigated threads. Combine them with metallics and holographic thread and you can come up with almost endless variations. If you go for embroidery thread and it's different then do some strength tests to see what the beaking strain is. I've tested a lot of madeira and brother threads and they break around 1kg(2.2lb). The mettler is around 0.7kg(1.5lb) and I would limit that to underbindings. Those strengths compare very well with a lot of the popular rodbinding thread. The test I did were on a piece that was 300mm(1ft) and I just used my drag scales which I verified as being pretty accurate. Embroidery thread contains silicon and you need to apply 2-3 coats of cp to prevent fisheyes. If your worried about guide strength when using it then don't. I did some tests and have a lot of rods built using madeira and have never had a problem and there is a lot of use.

Hello Gordon.

Col has talked me into doing some of the same tests on the more U.S. type "Rod" threads and since I have finely got the last of the tools and thread I intend to use for testing I hope to get started this weekend.

Col maybe we can come up with a single chart and if Tom thinks it's a good and usefull thing maybe he will put it in RodMaker or in the Library or both.

I will get up with you when I get done.

Tight Wraps.

Bob,

New Bern, NC.

Hi Robert,
Did some tests on brother thread and it came out at 1.1kg breaking strain and 19% stretch. Barry Chapman has got some mettler thread and will do more testing at the SEArbs meet. Barry has got a scale similar to yours so will be able to get some comparisons. I think we would have to do a lot of testing getting similar results before Tom would be prepared to put anything in print. I've got about 100 spools of madeira and 40 brother spools so I could do a lot more if necessary. Will post all the results when finished.
Tom, if you see this what number of test would you deem creditable?
