I usually order the disposable nylons from rod building supply stores looks like I forgot to re-order them and need to finish a rod pretty quick and do not want to pay the rush shipping......
Are the brushes you get at a local hobby store the same?
I was thinking of actually trying one of the sable. Is the only difference the name on the handle?

Hello Chris.

You can use them, I've been using the ones from Wally World with no problems!

Hi Chris,
I use brushes from craft stores all the time and their fine. Get a few different sizes and check them before use and trim any weird hairs off and some need the ends sqared off. I wash mine out with acetone and have been using the same brushes for quite a while. Sable brushes are comparitively expensive and I don't bother with them.

I use craft store brushes all the time. Use them once and pitch them (Cut off the handle for stirring sticks!)

If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!!

Opinions are like noses. Most everyone has one.
I wouldn't use a brush if you gave me a bucket full of them.
Spatula for me.
No bubbles trapped in a brush.
Use whatever works for you.

You can also use a piece of plastic you get from packaging such as shirt boxes. Just cut into strips the size you want and apply like a spatula by spinning rod and laying down the epoxy finish. You can get a very even finish that way.

A few years ago, I think someone posted that they finished a rod, dripping on epoxy from a dried french fry. I have never copied that effort for proof but the longer I build the more I think it would probably work. I believe the key word is drip rather than brush. I too now use a spatula. I believe I could easily use a brush. But I would drip more than brush.

Ha, I bet the fry would work too. Recently, I used a previously used 1/2 inch brush that was hard as a rock, but had a nice fine point...it worked great!

Craig, I had the same experience. I forgot to clean the brush and realized it was really just a spatula in disguise.
